Is it Summer Yet? April Showers Edition

Everyday closer to Summer means there will be more East Coast skating to feast on. Nothing against the West Coast, but the more footage from the North East states recovering from the colder temperatures, the better. With that being said, all of the following videos showcase what we miss out on by not heading to the warmer side of the country.
First Video up is Evan Smith X Chris Ray Collab for Transworld’s Cinematographer Project (Blog post to follow on the video). If you want to see the whole thing you can download it here – courtesy of Os Dias do Video. While i may disagree with Ray’s choice of music, Evan Smith can’t help but get good tricks. This is creativity at its finest – 2:20 and 3:32 :
Two introduction videos in the lineup this week. Huf Footwear introduces Josh Matthews working his way through SF. First clips says it all:
Etnies introduced Nick Garcia to their squad with this video (turn off the sound and put on something good because the music is terrible):
As the Think Skateboards video “Business as Usual” is released today, there should be some time to check out their flow rider Joey Guevara destroy everything he touches:
Secondly, Thrasher gave some credit to Think’s 1996 video Damage featuring Phil Shao, Wade Speyer, and Dan Drehobl among others:
Speaking of Thrasher, the Lifeblood team tore through Double Rock in this – featuring: Mason Merlino, Cody Lockwood, Kevin Kowalski, Dalton Dern, Frank Faria:
Last but not least – the honorable mentions go to: Antihero’s new catalog video featuring Frank Gerwer showcasing his amazingess. Love the advertising techniques over at Antihero. Which reminds me, check out the Peter Hewitt featurette over at the Chrome Ball. Finally, Street League sucks, but the video selections for the contestants are ridiculously good. The Jimmy Carlin and Ishod Wair videos make it a premature win.
World Travelers : End of March Skate Scene
It seems like March is the opening month of the skate season, when everyone skates their home spots and travels out to the ones they’ve waited all winter to get. With that being said, the end of March video collection features skating in NYC, SF, Austin, England/Spain, and China. Feed that need:
Starting on the West Coast – Slap Magazine continues their San Francisco Treat series with #9 featuring local SF friends: Spiro, Josh Robertson, Tony Manfre, Asa Cornelius, Nick Kunz, among others:
Making waves across the country, Thrasher Magazine shows up with their Death Match 2012 tour to Austin, TX with the Antihero team. I couldn’t ask for anything more with Andrew Allen, Julien Stranger, Robbie Russo, Frank Gerwer, Ryan McWhirter aka Peabody, and Tony Miorana:
From SF to New York, coast to coast, Slap Magazine kills it with their skate media. Colin Read’s New York Clip series is no different and #18 with Piro Sierra, Ryan Barlow, Matt Town, Billy McFeely, TJ Sparks, Brett Nelson, and Brett Conti crushing NYC, SLAP continues the ride:
Crossing the Atlantic, RVCA dropped some short coverage on their recruit Barney Page. Editing on this is good and the spot difference between England and Spain is crazy. The line at 1:04 puts this over the edge:
Last but not least – Thrasher’s China Skate Rock tour has turned some heads and not just for the questionable editing – but also for the sheer bad assness of the whole event – good music, killer skating, and all around good times. When they say in the caption “This is one of the wildest trips we’ve been on.” The footage proves it.
Featuring – Sean Gutierrez, Justin Figueroa, Don Nguyen, Bad Shit, Pat McLain, Dustin Dollin, Omar Salazar, LSDemons, Ryan McWhirter, and Tony Trujillo. GET IT!:
Part 1:
This Week in February – 2/10 – 2/17

This week is a little light, but the some solid video clips makes up for it. This is rolling around the internet with some attention but deserves a lot more. Independent releases Clint Walker’s Raw Ams Edit. This is how Clint chills from 93′ till:
Regardless of what you think of Jordan Hoffart (Im eyeing David Gravette on this one) his Heavy Hitters Recap 2007-2011 hits hard. Check the tailslide at the end.
A solid throwback clip of the week presented by Hella Clips defines the definition of nostalgia. Scott Johnston from Mad Circle Let The Horns Blow.
Still one of the best photos ever:

Honorable Mention goes to The Chrome Ball – which should win a lifetime achievement award. This week Swisher breaks down Rodney Mullen, Danny Way, and AVE. Thanks for the memories.
The San Francisco Treats : The Whole Meal

With the release of Slap Magazine‘s 6th San Francisco Treat video (among many of our other posts) we thought it was time to compile them all and bring everyone who hasn’t seen them up to speed. Here is 1-6. The media crew behind these are on top of their game. Enjoy:
Treat #1:
Treat #2:
Treat #3:
Treat #4:
Treat #5:
Treat #6:
The only disappointment in this series is that Slap never used this song:
Two Weeks in Heaven…and February

The following videos were compiled over the first two weeks of February and they absolutely killed it. For the beginning of the year, I think we have the some of the best videos so far. First up has to be the Thrasher Magazine’s Joey Digital Montage featuring Koston, Keegan, Brock, Donnelly, Plunkett, Nugget, P-Rod, Wieger, and BA, all – killing it.
Uploaded the same day as the Joey Digital Montage, came this out of the heavens and by that I mean Slap Magazine’s media crew. The San Francisco Treat #6 goes hard featuring a list of you’ve never heard ofs’ (unless you’re from the Bay Area presumably) featuring Daniel Spiro, Joe Andrews, Nich Kunz, Dillon Buss, Charles Rivard, Kai Gormsen, and Charlie Pravel.
Speaking of San Francisco, the new FTC’s video will blow minds. Here’s the VX Part 1 promo featuring: Jack Curtin, Brian Delatorre, Jabari Pendleton, Joey Johnson, David de los Santos, Ray Maldanado, Nate Keegan, Marcus McBride, Marquise Henry, Dave Abair, Karl Watson, and Adrian Williams among many more. Can’t wait for this:
Before I go overboard with the Thrasher edits, I have to say that the hype was all too true for this. I’ll rescind my previous mention, but Friday Night Fight was definitely the best Double Rock yet. Shout out to Austin Kanfoush, a Pittsburgh local making it to the show. The others featured make the video what it is – Andy Roy, Tony Miorana, Sean Gutierrez, Ryan McWhirter, and Pat McLain.
Last, but not least, Vox Footwear’s Where the Vox Are We? Part 1 video is East Coast Destruction featuring Dave Bachinsky and Cody McEntire among Matt Fenell, Brendan O’Conner, Sean Hernandez , Justin Clement , John Desimas , and John Coyne ripping for 6 minutes plus.
Honerable mentions go to:
Fatback-Skate Everything video featuring Omar Salazar, Jason Dill, Kevin Terpening, Tyler Bledsoe, and Gilbert Crockett. This has just about every obstacle you can think of and most you haven’t.
Tim O’Connor’s Third Eye View part brought by the Chrome Ball Incident in their recent interview with him.:
Finally, Tony Karr skates NYC like a local, take Quarternsnack’s word for it in his full part from the Good Luck Video.
January 27th – Wedding Crashers Edition

This week, we’ll be keeping it short since everyone is going to Jamal’s mom’s wedding. Congratulations Jaunitsia! Let’s start off with the latest video to premier this week. Quartersnacks Remix of Ishod Wair’s Since Day One (presented by Real). Just watch the flow and check the technique – hangtime at 2:53 is ridiculous.
Thrasher brought this vid out of the archives – Hellride Alcobendas circa 1993. A Spain tour consisting of John Cardiel and Danny Sargent surpassing time and space. This could have been filmed last week and still would make headlines :
Next up is Ryan Reyes Part (posted by Bones) from The Skateboard Magazine’s The Other Ones. Absolutely gnar:
Honorable Mention goes to Steve Olson’s part from Shorty’s Fulfill the Dream. Big ups to The Chrome Ball Incident for giving Steve some attention.
Last but not least:
Friday the 13th – Weekly Wrap Up

Jeremy Klein’s long awaited interview is up at the Chrome Ball Incident featuring questions relative to leaving World Industries and Steve Rocco for Tony Hawk and Birdhouse, Klein’s shared part with Heath Kirchart in The End, and his thoughts on the current state of skateboarding; further blowing minds with phrases like these :
Chrome Ball : How was it filming that Millionaire’s Club bit? Did those pornstars have a good sense of humor about the whole thing?
Jeremy Klein : It sucked making that thing. Those girls were the biggest bitches in the world. You’d think a chick that takes a load on her face for a grand would be happy to hang out with some shitty guy in a jacuzzi.
and
CB: Skateboarding is such a different animal than it was in the heyday of Rocco. What’s your take on skateboarding in 2011?
JK : Skateboarding seems like it’s less of a way of life now. It’s more of a sport. It’s taken a lot more seriously now than it was in the 90’s which has it’s good and bad points.

Mark Suciu’s Cross Continental Part (Atlas X Habitat Collaboration) is worth all the build up – so much footage:
Last but not least, Thrasher Magazine‘s very own P-Stone and his Skate Beers compilation is just what raw skating is about – featuring Tony Miorana, Trevor Morgan, Jordan Hoffart, Brandon Westgate, Div Adams, Roberto Aleman, Tom Remillard, Taylor Bingaman, and Ben Raemers:
Cardiel Comes Alive

The chrome ball incident put in work and scrounged up some of the best magazine ads featuring John Cardiel. Recently, Slam Magazine of Australia sat down with Cardiel to talk about his accident from way back and what he’s been up to since. The timing seemed right to combine them. All Hail…

This is the essence of style.

Best of November 2011: Video Fridays

Taking you away from all the hyped videos ie. Grant Taylor’s 2011 SOTY and the Girl and Chocolate Video Trailer, here are some less watched, but well made best videos of November. Coming in strong with true examples of NYC skating this video is everything that’s right with the world. Slap Magazine‘s New York Clip 12 Rush Hour:

The Real Deal: Omar Salazar Interview

NoCal shredder Omar Salazar gets the Chrome Ball treatment with a solid interview. Highlights include Omar getting advice from the lord and savior Cardiel, Salazar’s signature style, and the after effects of the Foundation drama:
Chrome Ball: Now growing up in the Sacto scene, I know you had to have seen your fair amount of pros back in the day. Who was one that made an impression on you as a young kid?
Omar Salazar: I’d be skating these different places and he’d [Cardiel] be there, too. And I remember this one time Cardiel just being like, “Hey! You gotta want it! You gotta fucking want it, dude!” I’ll never forget that. It just hit me. And it has stuck with me to this day. Not only in skating but for life, in general. If I’m trying something, I have to think to myself if I really want it or not… because if I don’t, what the fuck am I doing?
CB: Let’s talk a little about the “Omar style.” The hippie jumps, the bonelesses and the insane drop-ins.
OS: Totally, man. When I was younger, I was always looking for weird stuff to skate, like smashing into garbage or skating dirt banks you could barely roll through. It was insane. But that’s what I wanted to do.
CB: So what happened next [after getting booted from Foundation]?
OS: That’s when I got angry. That wasn’t why I started skating. I didn’t fucking start skating to get sponsored and it sure as hell wasn’t for people to take advantage of me. Skating was what made me happy and this bullshit was taking all that away from me.

Top 3 Videos of the Week/Month: October’s Very Own

NYC’s MTA system is notoriously annoying and consistently unreliable. The only good thing when you’re waiting or riding is day dreaming what it would be like to have the place to yourself, any NYC skateboarder is guilty. The following crew fulfilled it and took it one step further, the trains were operating. Coming in at one of the best and minimalistic edits of the year, via Quartersnacks – Slap Magazine Presents their New York City Clip #11: MTA Skating:
Gravis Footwear continues to add to their crew selection with the German banger Steve Forstner:
Hype! Skateboards does something other companies should have been doing years ago. With their Get Hyped! series, they shed some light on the future of skateboarding putting out the word on rad skaters across the country. Kody Kohlman fits in that category (see A Happy Medium for further info) :
Honerable Mention: Hella Clips presents Rodney Mullen’s Bricklayer with his part in Second Hand Smoke:
The ad in question at the beginning of the video is in fact “The House that Rodney Built”….you damn right:

Fourstar Clothing’s 15 year Anniversary

Thrasher Magazine provides a picture retrospective and interview of the 15 year legacy of Eric Koston and Guy Mariano’s Fourstar Clothing brand. Legitimately one of the best teams in skateboarding – Brian Anderson, Tyler Bledsoe, Andrew Brophy, Mike Carroll, Mark Gonzales, Rick Howard, Sean Malto, Shane O’Neil, Lucas Puig, Max Schaff, and Tony Trujillo. The list is necessary and for more clarification check out Fourstar’s own look at the past 15 years. Best of the Q and A
Thrasher: What was the wackiest piece you made?
Guy: A lot of jersey shirts, swishy pants, cargos… I had a pair of Timberland jeans that “inspired” me. They had a leather cuff on the back so my baggy pants wouldn’t get shredded. I loved those.
Eric: The Mike Carroll signature hoodie/scarf.
Thrasher: Why has the team always been such an important component?
Guy: Because of what we’ve learned by being on so many of them over the years. You could say we follow the Girl recipe. You can have all the best skateboarders, but if nobody likes each other it doesn’t work. The team has to be compatible on tours and share in the vision of the brand.
Eric: The team is a direct representation of the brand. Their personalities reflect the personality of the brand and the story it tells. They’re what gives Fourstar life.

Super Champion Funzone
A Closer Look at Jerry Mraz: East Coast Powerhouse
Quartersnacks continues to hold down East Coast skateboarding affairs with this quick reminder of NYC local Jerry Mraz whose talent goes beyond good skating to building some spots everyone enjoys (read BQE cement obstacles). Theory of Atlantis provides the interview. Here are the highlights :
Theory Of Atlantis : Do you get stoked when you roll up on one of your spots and find local kids you don’t know skating there? Or does it make you wanna wall them up with cement?
Jerry Mraz : That all depends. I spend a shit ton of time, effort, and money to execute my spot ideas. I build spots for everybody to fuck around on and also do a lot of modifying spots for me and my own projects. If a local kid is there skating a spot I just finished, that’s fine. It’s their hood so it’s their shit.I’m not in anyway saying you shouldn’t come here and skate, but using a little discretion is always a solid thing to do. I know the nature of the beast and I know the way the game is played. I’m out here in the streets of my favorite city doing what I love to do you know? So it is what it is, I really ain’t even mad.
TOA : You have to have had some bizarre or scary moments while working on these spots alone late at night. Anything stick out?
JM : One time I got rolled up on by the police in east New York at 2 in the morning by myself with about twelve buckets of wet concrete. I told them, “look I can explain!” I’m pretty good at talking to people in those situations usually.

Bastien Salabanzi All Grown Up

Controversial as ever, Bastien Salabanzi attempts to clear up some rumors with Jenkem Magazine (coming through lately on good interviews) about getting kicked off (quitting?) Flip, being the young kid center of attention, and his tendency to self-cheer. Honestly, I don’t care anymore, I’m happy he gets coverage and think he should let the skating do the talking. Either way good read:
Highlights Include:
Jenkem Magazine: Flip wanted you to skate big stairs and rails and that wasn’t something you wanted to do?
Bastien Salabanzi: So after I did one video part already with Flip, it was difficult to have them tell me stuff like, “hey you should go to El Toro and do a kickflip back lip on it,” when I didn’t feel that way. It’s not like soccer where you have a coach telling you what to do. I didn’t feel like doing the same things as I did before, kickflip front board on everything. Those tricks come from the heart, for yourself.
JM: So you didn’t do cocaine on the course of the Mystic Cup back in 2008 after your run?
BS:No [laughs]. I heard that rumor. I have gnarly allergy’s to wood and dust and so many things, so I’m always sneezing and touching my nose. I think that’s what made some people think that… But at the same time I look at my behavior and I can understand why people were thinking that. I was kinda crazy.
Just to remind myself how crazy he was back in the day here are some of his video parts:
